What is nitrogen gas (N2)?

Nitrogen gas, abbreviated as N2, has a boiling point of -196 degrees Celsius, an atomic number of 7, exists as a gas, is non-metallic, diatomic, inert, colorless, tasteless, and odorless, making up 78% of the Earth's atmosphere and is a key element in living tissues. This gas forms important compounds such as ammonia, nitric acid, and cyanides.

Liquid nitrogen is the liquid state of this element obtained from the fractional distillation of liquid air. Fractional distillation is a type of distillation used to separate components of a mixture, where the components reach their boiling points through increased pressure and decreased temperature. Its liquid state is represented as LIN, LN2, and LN.

The main application of this gas is to create an inert atmosphere in reactors and lamp manufacturing industries. It is also widely used as one of the most important and practical gases in the oil, gas, and petrochemical industries.

Nitrogen has 3 electrons in its outermost shell. The outermost shell is p and needs 6 electrons to be completely filled. Now, when we see that the outer p shell is half-filled, it is stable compared to other configurations. Given this half-filled configuration, nitrogen has a valency of 3. Therefore, it can accept three electrons. This is why nitrogen is found as a gas in nature, as two nitrogen atoms combine to form a molecule that is more stable than a single atom. Both nitrogen atoms form covalent bonds with their 3 outer shell electrons. A triple bond connects both nitrogen atoms as a nitrogen gas molecule.
