Nylon is a type of synthetic polymer that was first produced on February 28, 1935 by Wallace Carothers at the DuPont research center. Nylon is one of the most widely used polymers. It is a soft material produced from flexible substances. This project was a new structural product at DuPont, proposed by Charles Stine in 1927, where the chemical materials department consisted of several small research teams focusing on "cutting-edge research" in chemistry leading to "practical applications."

Harvard professor Wallace Hume Carothers was hired to lead the polymer research team. Initially, he was allowed to focus on pure research, building and testing the theories of German chemist Hermann Staudinger. He was very successful as his research greatly improved polymer knowledge and contributed to the advancement of science. The first commercial applications of nylon were in the production of toothbrush bristles in 1938 and women's stockings in 1940. Nylon 6 and nylon 66 are the most important polyamides used in industry as fibers.

Nylon was the first successful synthetic polymer in commerce. During World War II, silk was in high demand. Therefore, nylon was created to replace silk. At that time, nylon was used in the production of some military items such as parachutes, flak vests, and tires for various military vehicles. Apart from nylon 6 and 66 used as fibers in textiles, other types of nylon have also been produced, most of which are in their early production stages and some are not commercially produced due to the high cost of raw materials.

One of the slogans used to advertise nylon was that it was "strong as steel, yet delicate as a spider's web."

Today, nylon is used in various industries such as car tires, parachutes, ropes, and more. Looking back, we realize that one of the factors that led to the discovery of creating new fibers was the high price of Asian silk, most of which was imported from Japan. One of the biggest customers of Japanese silk was the American military, and due to the high price of silk, finding nylon was a significant success and achievement for them. During World War II, nylon replaced Asian silk, dealing a devastating blow to the Japanese silk market.
