Diamond slurry and diamond paste are used for lapping and polishing parts with high hardness such as ceramics, SIC, and tungsten carbide.

Alumina slurry and alumina paste are used for lapping and polishing parts with lower hardness such as various graphite parts, stainless steel, steel, phosphor bronze, etc.

To prepare diamond slurry, lapping oil can be mixed with diamond powder. For this purpose, 20 to 30 grams of diamond powder are mixed in each liter and used.

To prepare abrasive slurry of alumina, 50 to 60 grams of alumina powder should be mixed in each liter of oil.

Regarding the diamond mesh, 1 micron mesh is very fine and is used for finishing or polishing, and the larger the mesh number, the coarser the grain becomes.

As for the grading of alumina, grade 100 is very coarse and grade 1200 is very fine.

Alumina lapping paste is available in 1 kg packaging, diamond paste in 10 gram syringes, diamond powders in 10 gram packages, and alumina powders in 1 kg packages.

Lapping Oil:

A- Lapping oil is used for cooling the surface of the lapping stone and lubricating the surface between the lapped part and the lapping stone.

Lapping oil is water-based. The use of other lubricants and oils is not recommended. The main reason is the clumping of abrasive powder in the oil, which ultimately prevents the creation of a quality surface. The water-based lapping oil provided by various companies has different formulas and is offered in different packaging and at varying prices based on their history and advertising. For composite moly plate, it is recommended to use oil and other abrasive materials from Jet Lube Canada.

B: Abrasive powders: Abrasive powders are available in two different types: “diamond” and “non-diamond.”

Diamond powders are used for grinding the surface of parts with high hardness.

The sizes of diamond powder are as follows:

1 μ, 2.5 μ, 3 μ, 4 μ, 6 μ, 8 μ, 10 μ, 12 μ, 14 μ, 20 μ, 25 μ, 30 μ, 40 μ, 50 μ

For lapping surfaces that are very rough, it is recommended to first grind the part with a magnetic grinding machine, then based on the material, first lap with 25 micron diamond, then with 14, and then with 8 micron. If the shine of the surface is also desired, it can be achieved with 6 and 3 micron meshes as well. To prepare diamond emulsion, the best mixing ratio of diamond powder to oil is 30 grams of powder in one liter of oil.

Non-diamond powders: Two types are most commonly used:

1-Alumina-

2-Silicon carbide

The hardness of alumina is significantly greater than that of silicon carbide. Alumina can be used for lapping surfaces made of aluminum, copper, brass, iron, steel, and stainless steel. The grading of non-diamond powders is based on the following:

Grade 1200, 1000, 800, 600, 500, 400, 200, 100, 80, 60

In the grading of non-diamond powders, the larger the grade number, the finer the grain size.
