The U.S. Space Force's National Security Space Launch (NSSL) is a reliable and cost-effective satellite launch mission utilizing the capabilities of government and private companies

The NSSL, the "National Security Space Launch" mission by the United States Space Force, is designed to ensure reliable and cost-effective access to space for the launch of critical national security satellites. This program conducts important missions in various Earth orbits using the capabilities of government and commercial private companies. The U.S. Space Force believes that this National Security Space Launch program is essential to keeping the United States at the forefront of global space technology and supporting military and intelligence operations, paying particular attention to advancements in launch and space transportation technology.

Development of the second phase of the U.S. Space Force mission

This service aims to utilize the capabilities of new space companies and collaborate with them alongside Blue Origin for the development of the third phase of the "National Security Space Launch." On July 19 of this year, through amendments to the development contract of the second phase of this mission, over $1.7 billion was granted to fixed rocket launch suppliers for the Space Force, namely United Launch Services (a subsidiary of United Launch Alliance) and SpaceX.

The funding allocated for the second phase of the U.S. Space Force mission

The U.S. Space Force's Space Systems Command (SSC) also allocated about $1.1 billion for phase 2 launches until the fiscal year 2027, bringing the total amount allocated solely to United Launch for phase 2 from 2020 to now to $4.5 billion.

SpaceX also received $661 million through newly amended contracts with the SSC, raising the total amount granted to this company in phase 2 of the National Security Space Launch program to $4 billion.

The third phase of the program has commenced

In addition to what has been mentioned, SSC initiated the work on phase three of the National Security Space Launch with a total payment of $5.6 billion. Last month, this amount was paid to three companies, United Launch, SpaceX, and Blue Origin, for conducting at least 30 launches over the next five years.

It is expected that phase three launches of the National Security Space Launch mission will continue until June 2029; however, a five-year extension option for this deadline has also been anticipated. Furthermore, the entry of new launch service providers into this mission will be possible from the first quarter of the fiscal year (October to December) 2025.

Extensive launch capacity

General Christian Ponzahn, the Executive Officer of the SSC program for reliable access to space, stated on June 13: "As we had predicted, this year's payment basket was small as many companies are still developing their launch capacities." He added: "We took this consideration into account in structuring our strategy and created the possibility for new players to enter annually. We expect that with the entry of new suppliers and the completion of systems, competition and diversity will gradually increase."
