What is concrete flooring?

Concrete flooring is usually a surface that consists of a flat slab of concrete that is either poured on-site or prefabricated in a factory. Rebar, also known as reinforcing steel, is a steel rod or several steel wires that are often used to strengthen concrete. Given that concrete is strong in compression but relatively weak in tension, by integrating rebar into the concrete, it is capable of carrying tensile loads and thus increasing overall strength.

Concrete floors are concrete products that have shapes, thicknesses, and geometric features, each of which can be suitable for specific locations. Types of concrete flooring:

Generally, concrete flooring is divided into four types: hard mix concrete flooring, dry shake flooring, self-leveling mortar flooring, and thin concrete flooring (polymeric).

Hard mix concrete flooring

This is a type of cement-based flooring mortar produced in normal and plus types, used to achieve a smooth, beautiful, and highly resistant surface. This mortar, with a final strength of about 50 megapascals, is suitable for various flooring applications.

Method of executing hard mix concrete:

If using slurry (23 kilograms per square meter for a thickness of one centimeter), about 3.8 liters of water should be added to a 30-kilogram bag of hard concrete powder to make it completely homogeneous and compact. When spreading the slurry, the surface should be controlled by laser.

The troweling process can begin depending on the drying of the slurry. Troweling is initially done with a single-disc light trowel machine and then with a double-disc heavy trowel machine.

Pay special attention to the amount of water, as using a very thin slurry cannot guarantee an evenly distributed layer thickness; furthermore, during the drying period, the surface is prone to cracking due to shrinkage.

The time for flooring execution always depends on environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, concrete quality, etc.

It should be noted that floors made using surface hardeners can only be flawless if the execution guidelines are strictly followed and implemented.

Dry shake hard concrete powder

This is a type of hardening powder that is dry-shaken onto freshly poured concrete. All surfaces on which the dry hardening powder is applied become completely smooth, uniform, and wear-resistant after finishing operations.

Method of executing dry shake hard concrete

In the manual spreading method, the surface hardener mixture should be evenly spread at a maximum of 4 to 5 kilograms per square meter over the surface in two to three layers. The thickness of the layer obtained this way is approximately 3-4 millimeters. Due to the potential for aggregate sinking in the plastic concrete slab surface, it is not recommended to use less than 4 kilograms per square meter. Higher amounts are also possible (up to 6 kilograms per square meter), but it depends on the mix design and the amount of water in the underlying concrete.

In the dry shake method, it is better to perform this in two stages. If using a special machine, more material consumption is possible, although it is recommended that the second layer should be applied by hand on the concrete surface with a trowel. Ensure that the concrete is sufficiently moist to accept the powder hardener. Each layer should be worked by a trowel machine. This troweling process can begin 15-20 minutes after spreading the hardening powder. Avoid additional water use as much as possible. The troweling process should continue until a completely dry and hard surface is achieved. Industrial floors made with surface hardening materials are created with a glossy, smooth, and dust-free finish by adjusting the flaps of the trowel machine to higher slopes.

Self-leveling mortar

Self-leveling mortar is a self-leveling underlayment based on cement formulated with a specific combination of adhesives, polymers, and chemical additives. It is used to level, correct, and smooth concrete slabs before installing the final flooring (such as carpets, vinyl tiles, ceramic tiles, laminate, and hardwood) on covered concrete floors, both indoors and outdoors. Self-leveling mortar Alender, with its extraordinary features and high compressive strength, produces smooth, durable, and hard surfaces with a thickness of 3 to 5 millimeters, which is excellent for relatively flat floors that require minor leveling and roughness corrections.

How to use self-leveling mortar

Surface preparation stage

First, the substrate must be completely stable, clean, and free from paint and contaminants such as dust, loose materials, oil, chemicals, and other foreign materials that may prevent the self-leveling mortar from adhering to the substrate. For this purpose, it is better to use a wire brush or sandblasting method.

Next, to increase the adhesion of the self-leveling mortar to the substrate, ALEN-FIX primer should be used. This is done by first mixing ALEN-FIX with water in a 2 to 1 ratio to obtain a diluted solution. Then, the entire substrate surface is coated with the obtained solution. After about 10 minutes, the entire substrate surface is coated again with ALEN-FIX.

Mixing stage

Pour water into a mixing bucket and add the powder. Use an electric mixer and mix thoroughly for about one (1) minute until a smooth, lump-free mixture is obtained. For best results, maintain the correct mixing ratio.

Execution stage

After completing the mixing stage, spread the above mortar on the pre-prepared surface using a concrete trowel at the desired thickness, and use a roller to eliminate air bubbles within the mortar.

Curing stage

After the air removal stage is completed, it is necessary to cure (care and maintenance) the concrete surface as soon as possible. For this purpose, it is better to use a curing liquid for the concrete surface.

Thin concrete (polymeric concrete)

Thin concrete is the same as hard mix concrete that has been improved with the use of polymers and chemical additives to enhance its mechanical and chemical properties.

This product (ALEN-POLYMERCON) is used for the restoration of old and damaged flooring. Also, in spaces where there are height and time limitations, this product is applied on the surface of old concrete with the help of concrete adhesive (ALEN-FIX), similar to the preparation of the self-leveling mortar substrate.

Polished concrete | Glazed concrete | Viglas

In cases where your concrete is old and does not have a suitable appearance, several ways to create new flooring come to mind, among which one of the most cost-effective flooring options is polished concrete, also known as viglas, glossy concrete, glazing concrete, and polished concrete.

First, the existing concrete surface is cleaned using a scrubber, and then, while polishing the surface with the polishing pad installed on the relevant machine, a special liquid is sprayed until a glossy and uniform concrete surface is achieved.
