What is Concrete Flooring?

Concrete flooring is typically a base that consists of a flat slab of concrete, which can either be poured on-site or prefabricated in a factory. Reinforcing steel, also known as rebar, is a steel rod or a number of steel wires that are often used to strengthen concrete. Given that concrete is strong in compression but relatively weak in tension, integrating rebar into concrete allows it to support tensile loads and thus increases overall strength.

Concrete floorings are concrete products that have different shapes, thicknesses, and geometric characteristics, making each suitable for specific locations. For example, the use of interlocking concrete tiles, which fit together like puzzle pieces, enhances the aesthetics of pathways and sidewalks. These floorings can be used in areas exposed to heavy wear.

Types of Concrete Flooring:

Generally, concrete flooring is divided into four types: hard layered concrete flooring, dry-mixed concrete flooring, self-leveling bedding flooring, and low-thickness (polymeric) concrete flooring.

Hard Layered Concrete Flooring

This is a type of cement-based flooring mortar produced in normal and plus types, which is used to achieve a smooth, beautiful, and high-strength surface. This mortar has a final strength of about 50 megapascals, making it suitable for various flooring types.

Method of Executing Hard Layered Concrete:

If using a slurry (23 kilograms per square meter for a thickness of one centimeter), add about 3.8 liters of water to a 30-kilogram bag of hard concrete powder to achieve a completely uniform and compact mixture. When spreading the slurry, the surface should be controlled by laser.

The troweling process can begin depending on the drying of the slurry. Troweling is first done by a single disk light trowel machine and then by a heavy two-disk trowel machine.

Pay particular attention to water amounts, as using a very watery slurry cannot guarantee evenly distributed layer thickness; moreover, the surface is exposed to cracking due to shrinkage during the drying period.

The timing of flooring installation always depends on environmental factors such as temperature, humidity, concrete quality, etc.

It should be noted that floors made using surface hardeners can only be flawless if the installation guidelines are followed precisely.

Dry-Mixed Hard Concrete Powder

This is a type of hardening powder that is dry sprinkled on freshly laid concrete. All surfaces that receive this dry hardening powder become completely smooth, uniform, and wear-resistant after the finishing operation.

Method of Executing Dry-Mixed Hard Concrete:

In the manual sprinkling method, the surface hardener mix should be evenly spread at a maximum amount of 4 to 5 kilograms per square meter on the surface in two to three layers. The thickness of the layer obtained this way is approximately 3-4 millimeters. Due to the potential for the aggregate to sink into the plastic surface of the concrete slab, using amounts less than 4 kilograms per square meter is not recommended. Higher amounts are also possible (up to 6 kilograms per square meter), but they depend on the concrete mix and amount of water in the underlying concrete.

In the case of dry sprinkling done manually, it’s better to conduct this in two phases. If a special machine is used, higher material consumption may also be possible, although it is recommended that the second layer should be applied by hand onto the concrete surface with a trowel. Ensure that the concrete is sufficiently moist to accept the dry powder hardener. Each layer should be troweled by the troweling machine. This troweling process can start 15-20 minutes after the hardening powder is sprinkled. Avoid excessive use of water as much as possible. The troweling process should continue until reaching a completely dry and hard surface. Industrial floors made with surface hardeners are created glossy, smooth, and dust-free by adjusting the flaps of the troweling machine to higher slopes.

Self-Leveling Mortar

Self-leveling mortar is a self-leveling base layer made from a specific combination of adhesives, polymers, and chemical additives. It is used to level, correct, and smooth concrete slabs before installing the final flooring (such as carpet, vinyl tiles, ceramic tiles, laminate flooring, and hardwood) over internal and external covered concrete floors. Self-leveling mortar, with its superior features and high compressive strength, produces smooth, durable, and hard surfaces with a thickness of 3 to 5 millimeters that is excellent for relatively flat floors that require minor flatness and roughness corrections.

How to Use Self-Leveling Mortar

Surface Preparation Step

First, ensure that the substrate is completely stable, clean, and free from paints and contaminants such as dust, loose materials, oil, chemicals, and other foreign substances that may prevent the self-leveling mortar from adhering to the substrate. It is better to use a wire brush or the Sand Blast method for this purpose.

Next, to enhance the bonding of the self-leveling mortar to the underlying surface, use the ALEN-FIX primer. Mix ALEN-FIX with water in a 2:1 ratio to obtain a diluted solution. Then, apply the solution to the entire substrate. After about 10 minutes, coat the entire substrate with ALEN-FIX again.

Mixing Step

Pour water into a mixing bucket and add the powder. Use an electric mixer and blend the mixture thoroughly for about one (1) minute to achieve a smooth, lump-free mix. For best results, adhere to the correct mixing ratio.

Application Step

After completing the mixing step, spread the above mortar onto the prepared surface using a concrete trowel at the desired thickness and use a bubble roller to eliminate air bubbles in the mortar.

Curing Step

After finishing the air release stage, it is essential to proceed with curing (care and maintenance) of the concrete surface as soon as possible. For this, it is better to use a curing liquid solution for the concrete surface.

Low-Thickness Concrete (Polymeric Concrete)

Low-thickness concrete is simply hard layered concrete improved by using polymers and chemical additives to enhance its mechanical and chemical properties.

This product (ALEN-POLYMERCON) is used for renovating old and damaged flooring. It can also be executed in areas where height and time constraints are concerns, over the old concrete surface using concrete adhesive (ALEN-FIX), similar to preparing the substrate of the self-leveling mortar.

Polished Concrete | Glossy Concrete | Wiglas

In cases where your concrete has aged and does not have a suitable appearance, there are several ways to create a new flooring, among which one of the least expensive options is polished concrete, also known as wiglas, glossy concrete, glazing concrete, and polished concrete.

First, the existing concrete surface is cleaned using a scrubber machine, then while polishing the surface with a pad installed on the respective machine, a special liquid is sprayed until ultimately achieving a glossy and uniform concrete surface.
